Unfiled Returns?

Do You Have Unfiled Tax Returns?

If you have not filed a tax return for past tax years, you need to know that the IRS is looking for you. One of the quickest ways to get into trouble with back taxes is to not file a return. Taxpayers fail to file for all sorts of reasons. At Tax Masters, we don’t care why you haven’t filed. What we care about is the fact that you want to file your past-due returns and regain compliance with the IRS. Don’t let unfiled tax returns hang over your head for another day.

SFR (Substitute for Return)

If you fail to file a tax return, the IRS can file an SFR and charge you for what they determine you owe in back taxes, plus the penalties and interest. The IRS uses the information they know about you from past returns to complete a substitute return on your behalf, called an SFR. They use several factors including your known income and expected raises in pay to estimate your tax liability, then send you a notice requiring payment. If you have received notice of payment for a tax year in which you did not file a return, you still may be able to file your own tax return to replace the SFR. It is in your best interest to file your own return because an SFR does not allow for many of the deductions for which you may qualify.
